Soap and Water
Doing a little cleanup today. It’s barely 60F outside (yes, I know, but this *is* Florida) so I went looking for something low impact I could do inside with the garage door closed. I decided to take a swing at cleaning up the right side of the engine compartment, which was the dirtiest due to all of the horizontal surfaces.
So out comes the spray bottle of Spray 9 degreaser and a spray bottle of distilled water, along with a number of small brushes and such to help the stubborn dirt along. Because the car spent many years in the desert Southwest, there is a lot of fine reddish dust throughout the engine compartment and the accompanying nooks and crannies. Here’s what it looked like when I started.
Once everything got good and scrubbed, I rinsed the area with a spray bottle of distilled water. I followed that with a wipe down using a shop towel to get the big spots of water, then I went at things with some low pressure compressed air. And here are the results:
Since there was both degreaser and water flying around, I removed the linkages on the throttle shaft so I could dry out, clean and lubricate the ball joints. First, the linkage between the throttle shaft and throttle body.
Can’t put them back on yet - the ball on each of the levers the linkages connect to have to be cleaned as well, as they’re pretty dirty, too.
