Dusty Day
As the weather continues to be a little chilly for this time of year, I’ve tried to take advantage and do some work inside rather than get cold in the garage.
So that meant doing some sanding and repair work on the wood trim that surrounds the dashboard. In a previous blog I stripped the finish from the wood and left it to dry. Since this is solid wood and not veneered, I have a lot more latitude with how I handle the refreshing of it.
With the finish stripped I started sanding with 220 grit paper. Yes, that’s pretty coarse, but it will remove the remains of the finish that the stripper didn’t get as well as some of the staining the wood has from age and exposure to moisture. This is just a start to open the pores so I can get good penetration when I stain.
I’ll also have to do some repairs as I go along, as the joints on both pieces have sustained some damage, again from age and exposure to the elements. One side has completely separated at the joint, the other is just a little loose with one loose spline.
Here is the piece that goes along the bottom of the windshield on top of the dashboard. Note that it also has filler in a joint where two pieces were put together. A small part of the filler has come out, which I will patch with new filler.
