Sunday = Fun Day
Sunday came around and I was a bit sore from all the brute force work replacing the front springs yesterday. However, I couldn’t let a day go by without doing something, so....
First order of business was to flip the front swy bar over, as I had installed it upside down as you might recall from my last entry. Pretty straightforward, drop it out, flip it over, put everything back together. Not surprisingly, the bushings went in a lot easier as everything was now in the proper alignment.
From there I decided on something low impact - replacing the driver’s door check strap and cleaning up/inspecting the door and door card. Nothing out of the ordinary here, just a bit of dirt and cleanup needed.
Remove the door card and we can see the inside of the door.
I’m interested to know if there was moisture barriers installed in the openings, as they appear to have had something glued over them at some point in the past. In the interest of preservation, I’m going to install 2 mil plastic sheeting over these openings to prevent moisture intrusion and damage to the door card. The existing one is toast, as are the others, but I’ll start with this and replace the door cards later.
With the door exposed I replaced the door check strap with a new old stock unit I recently purchased. The check strap that was in place was in good condition, but since I replaced the passenger side check strap as well, I figured I would do both for consistency. The one I took out gets bagged, tagged and shelved for future use, if needed.
And now cleaned up and with the moisture barrier installed and a new door check strap.
And the door card and related items cleaned, polished and installed.
Only issue I have with this door other than the door card material being warped due to moisture is a crack in the top cushion and a broken return spring in the door latch. This shows up as the door release lever not wanting to return to the “closed” position. A minor nuisance, for sure, but something I need to address. The broken spring is part of the door latch assembly, not a separate part, so I’ll have to figure something out on that.
Lastly, I had to paint a piece of trim for the wife’s R129, and while doing so something caught my eye - the oil dipstick on the car has a red handle. The wife’s R129 is red... hmmm.
So take a look and see what else I painted while I was painting the wife’s car’s piece of trim....
